Two Separate Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Ships Listed Lost subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.

A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing boats carrying aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has deployed naval teams and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine total sailors, per a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bicycles and food.

Broader Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up lately, with comments from different representatives underscoring the complicated state of relations.

Reacting to certain comments, a prominent official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
