The President Invites Relatives of Attacked National Guard Members to the White House
Former President Trump announced on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the loved ones of a Guard member tragically killed last week to attend the presidential home.
He noted that he spoke to her parents and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Heartbreaking Shooting
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was killed in a attack on last Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her comrade, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in grave state.
Vigils across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.
White House Invitation
The commander-in-chief stated he’s discussed a visit to the White House for the loved ones of both members of the West Virginia Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a tough thing, come to the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to Sarah,” the president informed reporters. “And similarly with him, no matter the outcome.”
Public Response
Attendees assembled over the past few days at a local school in West Virginia to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both the soldiers had been working with the West Virginia National Guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to aid public safety in Washington DC.
Honoring the Soldier
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She conducted herself with inner fortitude, a bright grin and a optimistic attitude that inspired those around her,” the principal, the leader of Beckstrom’s former high school, informed the Associated Press. “She was caring, compassionate and always willing to assist people.”
Service arrangements for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Judicial Steps and Policy Adjustments
Officials have charged a 29-year-old Afghan national with one count of murder and two counts of violent assault while armed.
The incident caused the Trump administration to halt asylum processing and cease issuing entry permits to holders of Afghan passports.
Status of Wolfe
Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, began his service in February 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman High, according to the news agency.
He continues to receive treatment and is “in a critical fight”, the state’s leader Patrick Morrisey said on television.
The state’s top lawyer Pam Bondi told a news show that she planned to visit the family.
Impact of Beckstrom
Beckstrom, from her hometown, completed her education from her high school in 2023 and began her service not long after, working as a military police officer with excellence, according to the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she definitely had bravery,” Morrisey informed the crowd at the memorial. “Though her life was cut short, she has created a legacy that’s going to last forever.”
