The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
