Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
