Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Western Forces, Investigation Is Told
A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind sensitive technology allowing the militant group to identify Afghans who worked with allied troops.
Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger
The source, identified as Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the data leak were told to change residences and switch their mobile numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
Members of Parliament are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a serious breach of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to come to Britain to flee the regime.
The Information Breach Happened
An electronic document containing confidential details, comprising names, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker working at British military command in early 2022.
The leak came to light in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to move to Britain appeared on online platforms.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be a false assumption that the Taliban do not have comparable resources that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can locate your precise location. That's precisely what the unit achieved.”
When questioned about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the source stated: “They've got everything.”
Aftermath of the Data Breach
Early investigations provided to the investigation indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been killed.
A gag order concerning the breach was put in force in August 2023 and restricted any information regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.
Safety Measures
Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with informed affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.
“We advised that they moved if they could and altered their mobile numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained these details, would cause them being traced,” she said.
Contested Findings
Person A argued that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to conclude that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not confronting militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”
The source explained horrific treatment experienced by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to pressure relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
