He battled the legal system and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months following receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.

Expected Imprisonment

The convicted instigator – who's been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a number of court processes and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst growing talk that he will be transferred to a infamous high-security facility.

Previous Comments on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- paratrooper exhibited scant compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we offer these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up behind bars, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Facility Discussion

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an seeming effort to dissuade the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he predicted the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the consequence of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells accommodating four dozen inmates: “That is practically one meter squared per detainee.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the awful meals,” continued the senator.

Backers React

He is not the only voice speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.

Authoring in a leading publication, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest wrong in its history”.

“This is an injustice that gnaws the souls of millions of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Mixed Popular Opinion

This could be accurate given the substantial support Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. Yet his expected imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who feel he should be imprisoned for conspiring to block the elected leader from taking power – and additionally plotting to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent administration's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to get proper care – but respectful care in prison. He can’t persist being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the harsh conditions of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their rights. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently argued that civil liberties should not be for criminals – chosen to tour a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading conduct”.

Possible Jail Conditions

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 detainees, his probable assigned facility seems to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “unique” prisoners called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 12 miles away.

According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report indicated.
