Powerful Hearts Overpower Disappointing Celtic to Extend Eight Pts in Front
At a glance

- Callum McGregor cancelled out the early own goal by Dane Murray
- Hosts go 13 games without defeat for first time in 27 years
Rampant Hearts surged eight points clear of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish Premiership to strengthen their early-season championship claims and deepen the malaise around Brendan Rodgers' side.
Alexandros Kyziridis' fine strike and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a two-goal advantage that the reigning champions could not recover from.
The young defender - among three youth players in the Celtic XI - slashed into his own net in the early stages to put the home side ahead at a energetic their home ground, and it was the 22-year-old's foul that led to the penalty.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had quickly cancelled out the first goal, and the Swedish attacker almost put Celtic in front, choosing placement over power and allowing Alexander Schwolow to make a crucial stop.
But Derek McInnes' irrepressible Hearts seized control again to hand the visitors to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Hearts a significant lead at the summit.
The previous occasion they were this far ahead was in 2005-06 under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - a rare instance that a team has failed to win the title after building such an advantage in the past 27 years.
McInnes, whose former team were second to Celtic on four occasions, has been working hard to downplay title talk, as the club seek their maiden league title since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has seen it all before at Celtic - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's yet to finish second best.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they need to be taken seriously.
Analysis: Hearts Capitalize of Weakened Celtic
The Edinburgh side started with the confidence of a side undefeated in the league this season - the popular attacker poked a cross in for Shankland to stab wide.
The Glasgow team didn't aid their cause with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they faltered under their initial test.
A headed effort from Braga was tipped onto the woodwork by Kasper Schmeichel and the follow-up from Shankland was turned into the net by the hapless defender, in for the absent center-back.
The away side grew into the contest and started building moves. From one such move, the midfielder released the full-back to square for the captain, who slotted home.
Aside from the opportunity for Nygren, Celtic found it hard to generate chances for striker Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of stricken attackers their key strikers.
Hearts regained their intensity and versatility in attacking from across the final third. The Greek forward, a standout performer of the club's scouting network, struck low past the goalkeeper from the just outside the area.
Immediately after, Murray tripped Braga in the right side of the box and the penalty taker converted. And it could've been an more comprehensive victory, had replacement Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in a couple of moments involving big-money recruit Engles.
The midfielder's wayward free-kick delivery was in stark contrast to his European display in the continental victory over Sturm Graz and the national team player was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
What They Said
The Hearts manager: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games consistently.
"Our strength lies in, is good technical ability. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here previously. Recent additions are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's important for us to maintain this form. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. Following the initial fixtures is typically a benchmark of your standing."
The Celtic boss: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the play was recycled as a line so when they pass the ball, they should have players offside but didn't. We have got to improve with the shot.
"There's still so many points to play for. It's only the beginning. It's just nine matches. Obviously, being eight adrift is not what we would want. The comfort is there's so many games to play.
"Our attention must turn on the here and now and look to find more consistency and better performance in our play."
What's Next for Both Sides?
