Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
