Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Legal Action Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Authorities Says

Election Demonstration in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon are furious over the fact that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji has stated that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he incited "violent election protests".

A minimum of 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between police and military and protesters since the electoral process on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state securing an eighth consecutive term.

The opposition leader asserts that he won the election, a assertion dismissed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by law enforcement on protesters have worried the global community, with the UN, African Union and EU urging caution.

Official's Allegations

Earlier this week, Nji charged the opposition figure of planning what he labeled "unlawful" protests leading to the deaths, and also rebuked him for claiming win in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "associates responsible for an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Election Results

The president, who came to power in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October presidential election with over half of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the official announcement to prosecute him, but he had earlier announced that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being arrested.

When results were announced, he claimed that security forces used lethal force on protesters present near his home in Garoua, causing the death of at least two people.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the interior minister disclosed that an probe would be started into unrest prior to and following the announcement of the election results.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved were killed," he commented, without providing a specific number of demonstrators who have been killed in the confrontations.

Nji further mentioned that multiple officers of the police and military also suffered significant wounds.

Present Conditions

Even though the interior minister insisted the condition across the country was now under control, demonstrators continue to protest in certain regions of the nation, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters mounted barricades on that day, and ignited tires on the streets.

Experts warn that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a leadership vacuum.
