The Gunners' boss feels assured that his squad can continue to cope with fitness issues following revealing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for German Star

The German forward has been absent since the summer after undergoing an operation on his knee. Originally slated to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when advancing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is much more reliable and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This update creates a dilemma for the midweek home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is in contention following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Further fitness issues affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the heart of the defence for the league leaders.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on squad depth during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to handle such setbacks.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Absolutely, because this season has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in alternative spots, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at the top. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave further detail. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his personal desire to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, for me, I admire greatly for what he brings to the team, but his personality, his personality. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
