Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Announced

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld further information on why the talks had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pressured him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president supported a truce plan supported by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded speculation that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
